Several months after getting married, Earl and Joy began a scam where they took broken down cars for a small fee, fixed them up so they temporarily worked then sold them on to unknowing people. One such occasion was with Lloyd, who after the encounter became angered and convinced that all people were scum. To make up for this Earl tried to convince Lloyd that all people were not scum, which he successfully did when he ran towards a bomb he thought Lloyd was constructing. He was, in fact, building a rocket ship to escape to outer space, but when Lloyd understood that Earl put his own life in danger to stop Lloyd exploding a potential bomb, he realized that all people were not scum, and Earl was able to cross him off.
